What to Do in a Plumbing Emergency Before We Arrive
The first five minutes of a plumbing emergency matter. Shutting off the right valve, avoiding contaminated water, and knowing when to leave the house can prevent thousands in damage — and keep your family safe while help is on the way.
Step 1: Shut Off the Water
Locate your main water shutoff — usually near the street side of the house, in the garage, or in a closet near the front wall. Turn it clockwise to close. For localized problems, shut off the fixture supply valve under the sink or behind the toilet instead.
If water is spraying from a burst pipe and you can’t reach a valve safely, leave the area and call us — don’t risk electrical contact with standing water.
Burst or Broken Pipe
After shutting off water, open faucets on the lowest level to drain remaining pressure. Move valuables away from the wet area and use buckets or towels to contain spread — but don’t enter flooded rooms with submerged outlets.
Take photos for insurance before cleanup begins. We’ll repair the pipe and help identify whether corrosion, pressure, or a slab shift caused the failure.
Sewage Backup
Stop using all drains and toilets immediately. Sewage contains bacteria — keep children and pets away from affected areas. Do not run washing machines or dishwashers, which can push more waste backward through the line.
Do not use: Chemical drain openers on a sewage backup. They won’t clear a main line blockage and create hazardous fumes in standing water.
Our team clears the line, cameras it when needed, and explains whether the cause is roots, grease, or a collapsed section of pipe.
Gas Smell Near a Water Heater or Stove
If you smell rotten eggs or sulfur near a gas appliance, don’t flip light switches or use your phone in the room. Leave the house, call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 from outside, then call us for the plumbing side once the utility clears the area.
Gas leaks near water heaters often involve the supply line or flex connector — not something to tighten yourself.
Leaking or Failed Water Heater
Turn off the gas valve or breaker to the unit. If the tank itself is leaking (not just a fitting), shut off the cold water supply to the heater. A full tank can release 40+ gallons — keep the drain path clear and call for same-day service.
While You Wait for the Plumber
- Document damage with photos and video for insurance
- Move furniture and electronics off wet floors
- Place fans only if outlets are dry and safe
- Keep the main valve off unless we advise otherwise
- Have your water bill handy if you’re reporting a hidden leak
We offer same-day urgent repairs across Greater Los Angeles. When you call, describe what you see, what you’ve shut off, and whether water is still actively flowing — that helps us dispatch with the right equipment.
