10 Signs You Need a Plumber (Don't Ignore #7)

Kitchen sink and faucet in a Los Angeles home

Not every drip needs a plumber — but some warning signs mean real damage is already underway. Here are ten signals we see every week in Los Angeles homes, and what to do about each one.

1. Drains That Keep Slowing Down

A drain that clears slowly once might be a minor clog. When the same sink, tub, or shower keeps backing up after you plunge it, grease, hair, or mineral buildup is likely deeper in the line — and DIY snakes often push the blockage farther down.

2. Gurgling Sounds From Drains or Toilets

Air trapped in your drain system causes gurgling when water runs elsewhere in the house. That often points to a partial blockage or a venting issue — both worth professional inspection before a full backup.

3. Water Stains on Ceilings or Walls

Yellow-brown rings on drywall or bubbling paint almost always mean an active leak above. In two-story LA homes, an upstairs bathroom or supply line is the usual suspect. Don’t paint over it — find the source first.

4. Sudden Drop in Water Pressure

If every fixture loses pressure at once, check whether your main shutoff is fully open and whether neighbors report the same issue. Isolated low pressure in one area often means a failing valve, corroded pipe, or hidden leak.

5. A Toilet That Runs Nonstop

A running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons per day and spike your LADWP bill. Flapper and fill-valve kits fix many cases — but persistent running after replacement may signal a cracked tank or high water pressure stressing the fill valve.

6. Warm or Damp Spots on the Floor

Hot spots on tile or hardwood with no obvious spill can indicate a hot-water line leak under the slab or in the wall — common in older LA homes with copper pipes. This needs prompt leak detection, not a wait-and-see approach.

7. Sewer Smell Indoors (Don’t Ignore This One)

A rotten-egg or sewer odor inside your home is never normal. It may mean a dry P-trap, a broken wax ring, or — more seriously — a cracked sewer vent or line. If the smell is strong or persistent, stop using affected fixtures and call a plumber the same day.

Why #7 matters most: Sewer gas isn’t just unpleasant — it can indicate a backup or broken line that leads to contamination and costly remediation if ignored.

8. Multiple Fixtures Clogging at Once

When the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and toilet all misbehave together, the problem is usually in your main line — not individual drains. That’s a job for professional drain and sewer cleaning, not liquid drain cleaner.

9. No Hot Water — or Rusty Hot Water Only

Complete loss of hot water often means a failed heating element, gas valve, or thermostat. Rust-colored hot water only can signal a corroding tank that’s nearing the end of its life. Our water heater team can tell you repair vs. replace on the first visit.

10. An Unexplained Jump in Your Water Bill

LADWP usage that climbs without lifestyle changes usually means a hidden leak or running fixture. Read our guide on high water bills for a quick self-check — then call if the numbers still don’t add up.

When to Call vs. When to Wait

Minor drips and single slow drains can sometimes wait for a convenient appointment. Sewer smells, warm floor spots, multi-fixture backups, and active ceiling stains should not. When in doubt, a diagnostic visit with upfront pricing beats an emergency repair after weekend damage.
