Hard Water in Los Angeles: What It's Doing to Your Pipes

Plumbing pipes in a residential wall

Los Angeles tap water is safe to drink — but it's hard. Calcium and magnesium minerals leave scale inside pipes, heaters, and fixtures long before you notice a problem on the outside. Understanding hard water helps you protect the plumbing you can't see.

What Makes LA Water “Hard”?

Water hardness measures dissolved minerals — mainly calcium and magnesium. Much of Los Angeles draws from groundwater and imported supplies that pick up minerals along the way. LADWP treats water for safety, but hardness isn’t fully removed.

You’ve probably seen the evidence: white crust on faucet aerators, spots on glass shower doors, and soap that doesn’t lather easily.

How Hard Water Damages Plumbing

Scale builds in layers on pipe walls, narrowing the opening water flows through. In copper and galvanized lines, that means lower pressure over years. In tankless heat exchangers, even a thin scale coat reduces efficiency dramatically.

Water heaters suffer most: sediment accumulates at the bottom of tanks, forcing the burner to work harder. We’ve opened tanks in LA homes that looked half-full of mineral sludge after a decade of no flushing.

Signs Hard Water Is Affecting Your Home

  • White or green crust on faucets and showerheads
  • Gradual loss of water pressure over months or years
  • Water heater rumbling or popping sounds
  • Hot water runs out faster than it used to
  • Soap scum that won’t wipe off shower glass
  • Appliances (dishwasher, washing machine) failing early

Impact on Fixtures & Appliances

Cartridge valves in modern faucets clog with mineral debris. Showerheads lose flow through blocked nozzles. Ice makers and refrigerator lines scale shut. These are annoyances — but they’re also early warnings that larger equipment (your water heater) is next.

Solutions That Actually Work

Whole-home water softeners exchange hard minerals for sodium or potassium, protecting pipes and appliances system-wide. They’re the most complete fix if you’re staying in the home long-term.

Point-of-use filters help drinking water taste but don’t protect your water heater or main lines.

Regular maintenance — annual water heater flushes, aerator cleaning, and descaling tankless units — extends life even without softening.

Plumber’s note: If you’re converting to tankless, factor in descaling maintenance or a softener. LA hard water will destroy an un maintained heat exchanger in half its rated lifespan.

What to Do Next

Start with a water heater inspection if yours is over 8 years old or making noise. We flush tanks, check anode rods, and tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes sense. For whole-home softening, we coordinate with water treatment specialists and handle the plumbing connections.
